THE FIRST UDT EUROPE RUN BY CLARION EVENTS PROVES TO BE A GREAT SUCCESS
The UDT Europe conference and exhibition, which was held in Cannes from June 9-11, attracted in excess of 1300 visitors from over 50 countries. With a notable increase in the number of exhibiting companies, particularly first time exhibitors, compared with 2008. This coupled with an increase in the number of daily visitors gave a clear indication of how highly regarded UDT is to the underwater community despite the economic downturn.

"I got excellent feedback from both the delegates and exhibitors. Everybody senses a new spirit."
Jan Wiedemann, EDITOR IN CHIEF NAVAL FORCES.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER PRAISES NEW TECHNOLOGIES ON DISPLAY
Keynote speaker, Rear Admiral D Johnson, Commander, Naval Undersea Warfare Center and Deputy Commander for Undersea Technology United States, said: "Overall we are looking to industry to come up with cost effective solutions incorporating features such as Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS), plug & play and open architecture and I do believe that our industry partners are moving in the right direction. As for UDT as a show, it is giving me an opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of some very promising technologies."

CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS
Over the past 22 years the UDT Europe conference has been addressing the increased complexity and challenges of asymmetric threats in the undersea defence community. 2009 was no exception, with over 120 speakers from a multitude of nations, the conference examined the military requirements in the ever changing landscape of undersea maritime security and force protection.

The keynote presentations from France, Germany, USA, Italy and Belgium set the tone for the conference covering:
• ASW capabilities,
• Combat Systems
• Mine clearing and countermeasures
• Sonar sensing and tracking systems
• Unmanned underwater vehicles,

The conference certainly proved to be focal point for discussion and understanding technological capabilities within current cost and timing constraints. The exhibition provided delegates with a chance to see these systems in a real environment and further explore their potential.

EXHIBITORS CHOOSE UDT AS A LAUNCH PLATFORM FOR NEW PRODUCTS
BAE Systems unveiled its new Talisman L. The unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) is a much smaller system that retains the core technologies of the company's Talisman M demonstrator.

Sonardyne Asia announced the signing of a US$1.5 million contract with China for its Sentinel Intruder Detection Sonar (IDS) system.

Danish company Reson has secured a contract for its SeaBat 7128 high-resolution forward-looking sonar system from India's Naval Science and Technology Laboratory (NTSL). The sonar will be used an experimental large unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) being developed by NTSL.

Swiss based company Fischer Connectors launched a new product range. The company already provides a range of connectors that have extensive utilisation in the underwater market.

UDT Europe, Congress Centre,Hamburg, Germany, 8–10 June 2010
2010 sees UDT Europe returning to Hamburg after the successful event there in 2006. UDT Europe 2010 will address the ever changing nature of global operations and the increased complexity of maritime security.

The UDT conference is the definitive forum to address key issues in the undersea defence community and we look forward to next year’s programme under new conference chair, Ernst-August Petsch, Captain FGN (Retd).

For 23 years UDT has been uniting naval procurement specialists, defence scientists, prime contractors and key technology providers for three days of valuable discussion, networking and showcasing new technology.
